The image is lacking in terms of clarity, and it is quite impossible to read text at resolutions superior to 1024x768, which is a poor standard by all means.
I cannot help but be really disappointed with the ATI onboard video adapter, which is found on the G3 series. I am a fan of traditional CRT monitors for their versatility and display quality.
The display quality in combination with a good Matrox video adapter is superior to the one achieved on digital FDP with excellent colour fidelity and good accuracy up to 1600x1200 for graphics, and 1280x1024 for text applications. Philips P-series like the 109P40 and subsequent 202P40 -70s are all excellent stuff. This is the reason why I assembled dedicated machines for specific tasks, like photography, creative writing, games, etc. Display quality is really the interface between the user and the computer. I am very concerned with the display quality. The Beige at home (the one in my equipment list below) looks very nice with a big 128MB video card driving a 19" NEC MS97F CRT. My "good" experiences were with professional-grade CRTs the "home office" CRT combined with an adaptor was not very satisfying. I now realize there is a huge difference in CRT monitors. That surprised me as I thought that image quality was largely a VRAM issue.
Although it worked, the image quality was never what is was on the better quality monitors with or without the extra power of a video card. I needed to use the Beige again so simply connected an inexpensive generic VGA monitor to the Beige with a VGA-to-Mac connector. Later, the LaCie went to the a new G4 and the video card returned home. I brought in an extra ATI Rage 129 Orion 16MB card from home, installed it and the image was lovely. However, the new one had a VGA connector. When the monitor died, we replaced it with a nice LaCie 22". With an Apple Colorsync display, the screen image was excellent. I once had a Beige G3 MT at work with a full 6MB VRAM.
